Laura and Ryan met me up on Guanella Pass for engagement photos in the same alpine basin where they'd later get married. Wind in the willows, big sky, and the kind of light that only happens above tree line.
Why Guanella Pass
Guanella Pass climbs to 11,669 ft between Georgetown and Grant and gives you above-tree-line views without a backcountry hike. For Laura and Ryan it was the obvious choice, it's where they were getting married, and they wanted engagement photos that felt like a preview of the wedding day instead of a separate location.
The Session
We worked through golden hour, moving between wildflower meadows and stretches of willow as the light dropped warm against the surrounding peaks. No stiff posing, just the two of them in the place they'd already chosen as theirs.
Planning a Guanella Pass Session or Wedding
Pack layers, a wind shell, and water. Plan around sunrise or sunset for the softest light, and remember the elevation, give yourself a day to adjust if you're flying in. Late July through early September is the sweet spot for wildflowers and stable weather.
